Ramla Bay is the largest sandy and quite beach on the island of Gozo. It is located at the bottom of a rich and fertile valley on the northern side of the island. The bay can be located from the village of Xaghra, which overlooks this valley and can also be reached from the village of Nadur. The sand is of a strong red colour, therefore the name Ramla il-Hamra, meaning the Red Sandy Beach, makes it different from all other beaches in Malta. It is situated at the end of a stunning green valley, surrounded by magnificent views. A statue is dedicated to Our Lady of Hope, stands vigil in the middle of the beach.
Apart from being a beautiful beach, the area around it is very interesting and provides some very rich historical treasures. Sometimes when swimming in Ramla l-Hamra, far from the shore might notice a straight shallow wall. The Knights of St. John fortified the bay against enemy intrusion. They constructed Vendome battery, which today is not noticeable and in 1715, even went so far as to construct a submerged wall to deter marauding pirates from landing on the beach. Roman remains lay beneath the sand and the famous Calypso Cave overlooks the Western side of the beach. According to historic tradition, this is the cave referred to by Homer in The Odyssey. The nymph Calypso lived in this cave and it is where she entertained Ulysses for seven years before he resumed his journey. Calypso Cave is in fact a series of caves and according to some sayings these caves extend right down to the sea. One can visit the cave by walking up from the beach.
Today Ramla l-Hamra exhibits nothing of these turbulences. In the summer months it is admired with swimmers, sun worshipers and people sitting around tables beneath sun umbrellas at a kiosk, sipping cool drinks and nibbling snacks. During winter months Ramla l-Hamra affords enjoyable and serenity walks.
