In the seventies, the statue of the Risen Christ was placed on the 320 feet high Tal-Merzuq Hill. It can be seen on the way to Marsalforn Bay. For the adventurous people there is also a rough path, which leads all the way up to the top of the hill.

There are several legends surrounding this hill, some saying it was once a volcano, others that beams of light were once seen to come out of the hill. The first statue was placed on the hill in 1904 when Gozo was consecrated to Jesus the Redeemer. Hence the hill became popularly known as ‘Tas-Salvatur’, meaning ‘saviour’. It replaced a wooden cross that had been erected previously. The statue was not resistant to the elements and had to be replaced in the sixties. However the new statue was also destroyed during a thunderstorm when its supporting pedestal gave in. Parts of this statue can still be seen strewn around the hilltop. Today’s statue is made of reinforced concrete and is thus more resistant to the elements.

Mgarr ix-Xini is located close to Xewkija which is known for its majestic church. Mgarr ix-Xini is alleged to have been one of the harbours used by the Knights’ galleys. The entrance to this coastal inlet is guarded by a tower known as ‘It-torri tal-Mgarr ix-Xini’ which was built in the sixteen century to safeguard this inlet. It was built at the expense of the local Universitas on a plan by Mederico Blondel, an engineer of the Order of Saint John. It is possible to walk from the bay to the tower through a restored ancient footpath.

The bay has a small pebbly beach with captivating caves on cliff faces. This isolated spot is ideal for swimming and attractive to divers. One can dive to the intentionally wrecked ferry “Xlendi” even from this bay.

The famous Blue Grotto and the surrounding coastline is one of the most scenic and spectacular in the Maltese islands. The name was given by a British soldier who thought it was similar to Grotta Azzuzza in Capri. You can take a boat-trip from the picturesque Wied iz-Zurrieq (Valley of Zurrieq). The trip can vary, according to the sea level, because when it is calm you can also be taken to a number of other, smaller caves. It is also interesting to notice the deep blue of the sea and colourful spectacle that coral and other marine life give to the area.

An uninhabited island called Filfa can be seen from Wied iz-Zurrieq. During the time when Malta was a British colony, the island of Filfla was used for target practice by the British Armed Forces. The island is now protected under Maltese law.

The Blue Hole is a beautiful rock formation carved by nature and is probably the most popular dive site of Gozo. A spectacular and memorable beginning to any one of a different number of dive routes starts here. On entering this ‘hole’ the diver has access to the sea in the form of a great archway. Turning to the right you soon dive through Gozo’s biggest tourist attraction, the Azure Window which is the best place to see Gozo’s biggest groupers and also Dentex or Amberjacks hunting for sardines. As you come back into the Blue Hole have a look at the cave where you’ll find lots of shrimp and the odd conger eel.

The Rozi tugboat in Cirkewwa is another wreck which can be found at a bearing of 300 degrees from below the lighthouse. This wreck can be found after about a 100 metre swim. The visibility is between 10 – 30 metres.

It was sunk in 1992 as a tourist attraction, intended to be visited by Captain Morgan’s submarine tours. The submarine nowadays does not operate any longer, thus this wreck is now visited by hundreds of divers every year. This tugboat was originally built in Bristol in 1958 by Charles Hill and Sons Ltd and until 1969, it was used in Liverpool by Johnston Warren Lines Ltd. Then it was sold to Rea Towing Co. also in Liverpool until 1972 when then was sold to Malta Ship Towage Ltd. In 1981 she was then sold to Tug Malta to be used in the Grand Harbour in Valletta. In 1992 it was bought by Captain Morgan Cruises.

The wreck is a 30 meter harbour tug, full of marine life and divers can watch sea breams, scorpion fish, rainbow wrasses and cardinal fish. This wreck is fully intact except for the propeller and engines which were removed before it was sunk.

It’s in a depth range between 25 and 35 meters. Upper deck lies at 25meters and rudder is at a depth of 36 meters. This wreck is home to 1000`s of fish and lies on a sandy seabed. On the way to the Rozi, one can observe a huge anchor standing on its own. Near to the Rozi wreck is also an arch, located at the end of the reef. Before you arrive to the arch, one will meet two swim through tunnels where a large number of fish can be seen, such as barracuda and silver beam.

She was built by Peenewerft shipyard as a Minesweeper for the German Navy. She then served with the Armed Forces of Malta for over 12 years and was involved in numerous patrol and border control operations.

Malta’s Bristol Blenheim Bomber is known to be the only one of its kind in the world and consequently this is a very interesting and historically important wreck.

The Bristol Blenheim Bomber was a RAF plane which was ditched in the sea when it had been damaged by a German aircraft. It is well preserved for a 66 year old wreck and lies at a depth of 42m. Remaining sights includes engines, wings, propellers and pilot seat; most parts are still there but may be unrecognizable. The rear of the fuselage was separated from the plane on impact with the water and now lies just a few meters away from the main wreckage. Fauna and flora include sponges, crabs, lobsters and tube worms. Finding this wreck is difficult and you will need to use a dive boat and local guide to get there. Plane wrecks are very rare and usually very badly damaged so it is very exciting to dive one in such a good state of preservation.
